The Impact of Inappropriate Use of Technology in Education for Students

Introduction 
In this paper the writer will discuss about technology in education which is include the impact of technology for students and also how technologies are used in schools in general. In this era many people use technology in every aspect of their live and also in education, that’s why the writer try to discussed about the impact of inappropriate use of technology for students in education. several article bellow will discussed about it like technology and education change, technology use influenced student achievement, how technology influenced students motivation and also how technology can be use to support writing process for students.

In the first article by Rozalind discussed about “Technology and its Impact in the classroom”(Rozalin;2004), that focused on the usage of technology in the classroom for students at risk who have problem with low GPA (grade poin average) and attendance. in this era the usage of computers increased there are so many computers with abundant software in the schools. Actually using computers and technology useful for students at risk, it can increased the students performance but students still fall in grade because there is no expert or training how to used technology effectively in the classroom. And it make the teacher prefer to use traditional way in learning and teaching activity in the classroom that cause the students at risk still fall in grade or score and the using of technology can increase the student in performance because they can use power point, microsoft word and other software to improve or support their performance and overall in this articles the author suggest to make technology effective to change in at risk students in grade and attendance the teacher need to be train or the school need tutor that teach how to use technology at school effectively.

Related with the impact of inappropriate use of technology in education Jing Lei, Yong Zhao also discussed about "Technology use and students achievement" (Lei;2007) that focused on the quantity and quality of using technology by the students. technology can give positive impact and negative impact depend on the quantity and quality of the usage of it. Based on the observation in the middle school showed that students spent about 3 h per day on computers during 2003-2004 academic year and it influenced their achievement because they use computers to something that not contribute in language academic and it decrease their score or GPA (Grade Poin Average), actually spending some time on computers may help students increase their learning outcomes when they use the technology effectively. The usage of technology and also technolgy can give positive impact when we see that from the other side not only from the score but also from the mental of students use technology to communicate with other can increase the students’ self esteem. so from this articles the author conclude that the quality is more important than quantity when the students use technology.

Mark Granito said in his article “The Effect of technology on Student Motivation and Knowledge Retention” (Granito ;2012) that motivation is the important tool for students to rise up their interest with the subject and create the spirit for students to achieve the goal of study. That why the teacher always find the way how to make the students interest with the subject in this article Mark Granito as the observer and the writer make some observation to measure how technology influenced students’ motivation the participant are 102 seventh grade students with 52 boy and 50 girl. The participant was divide into 3 category. A students who like using computer, B students who was given an option to use technology (computers) or paper. C students who prefer to use traditional way or paper and the was given a retention test with computers and also with paper or traditional way. Based on the result from this observation showed that actually all of students enjoy using computers as a tool of their learning activity hey enjoy using digital story telling and voice treat. Technology can increase students motivation but unfortunately it’s still fall to increase students’ knowledge retention especially for students who prefer to use traditional way that because of their learning habit so technology has the potential to be a powerful of educational tool for students who interest in it. For students with no interest in using technology, they will still benefit educationally from traditional methods. But overall technology need to taught as the needed in the modern era and it’s also important for students who prefer use traditional way in learning. because of the needed of using technology in this era technology become abundant. 

the article of Barbara Means also restated the increasing of the needed of technology in the article “Technology and Educational Change”(Means; 2010) Recent large scale national survey found that teacher practice with technology increase around 2005 and 2007. Actually teacher and school try to adopt and implemented technology and computers as tool of education in the schools in order to increase students learning outcomes To know the effectiveness of using technology in education for students the author did some observation by using reading and mathematics software in schools. The result from the observation showed that implementation of the technology or software can be effective for students if the teacher understand the way to use the software in the classroom, so the teacher need to be trained, how to use the software and how the teacher manage the classroom to make the smooth transition between the using of technology in the classroom and teacher explanation in classroom in order to make the effective teaching and learning activity in the classroom. So if the teacher use technology appropriately and understand how to use it in the classroom we can get the benefit of using technology in education. For example technology to support writing for students with disabilities. 

In the fifth article “Technology to Support Writing by Student with Learning and Academic Disabilities (Peterson;2011). Goerge R. Peterson showed that there is a modern way to write something we can move from using a paper to use a software of computers. Goerge also explain in his article that technology have potential to support both writing and teaching writing for student especially for students with learning and academic disabilities because they have decrease skill that do not increase over the time or year in the school and in writing process they make many mechanical errors such as spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. Technology can be useful for students with learning disabilities to help the remediating and compensating to solve the problem because in the software of computers there are Word processors, word prediction, spell checkers, text-to-speech, that can be potential to help the students for learning disability so with he correct and effective usage technology can be useful tool including for students with learning disabilities 

Conclusion 
 From those five articles we can conclude that technology become popular and abundance in this era, many people use it in every aspect of their live include in education but many people such as the teacher and students haven’t known how to use technology effectively there is no training or instructor for the teacher and students to use it. and it can give some impact for students achievement for example students spent more than 3 hour per day in front of computers for something that can’t give contributed for their academic achievement and also the teacher still use the traditional way to teach the students and make the students passive because the teachers don’t have alternative or creative way to express student’s knowledge in the classroom, this case happen because the teachers don’t understand the appropriate way to use technology in the classroom. Actually technology can be useful or useless for students in education. It depend on how the students use it, or the quality of technology use of students. Technology can be useful if the students use it correctly for example technology is really useful for student with learning disabilities because it can support them to write. Overall technology can be effective in education to improve student’s knowledge if there is training for the teacher about how to use technology in the classroom and after that the teachers give the instruction for the student about the effective way of using technology in education, so as the writer I suggest when the teacher prefer to use technology in education for their students they have the effective way to use it and how to make it effective for students.
